2010–How do you say that?

Happy New Year! With a new decade comes options on how we say the year: do you find yourself saying “two thousand and ten” or twenty ten”? A quick survey of the staff revealed mixed results. I am leaning toward “twenty ten” as the simpler, shorter sounding version. It will be easier a few years from now to say twenty thirteen as opposed to two thousand and thirteen. Now I just have to make it a habit!

Spread Joy! 5 ways to make work more fun

1. Smile more. Studies show smiling causes changes in the brain and blood that not only make you feel happy, but also create positive feelings in others.

2. Use Enthusiastic language. Great!, Wow!, and I love it! liven things up.

3. Don’t wait to celebrate. Reward your team along the way for progress. Send a note, small gift, or host an impromptu pizza party.

4. Brag. Send a memo (copy to the boss) when your team does well. Consider putting an item in the company newsletter or a professional journal.

5. Promote silliness. Team meetings become fun when you bring in silly putty, koosh balls, tiny puzzles or slinkys. Five minutes of play can boost spirits and performance.

Easy Pizza from my kitchen (and garden!)

We made a yummy couple of pizzas last night in our kitchen and I thought you might like to try it if you have an abundance of garden tomatoes this year. We also used a few snips of basil from our herb garden. Enjoy!

How to do it:

Put together 1 or 2 pizza crusts; I used the Betty Crocker packet that makes a 12-inch crust, and all you need to add is 1/2 cup hot water for each packet.

For sauce for a 12-inch pizza, quarter about 15 cherry tomatoes and place in a small frying pan  along with 2 tablespoons olive oil, several leaves of chopped fresh basil, and several slices of diced deli salami or pepperoni. Cook this over medium high heat for about 3 minutes, pressing on tomatoes to flatten and stirring often. It will thicken a bit as you cook it.

Spread the sauce over the crust you’ve prepared and top with your favorite pizza toppings and several slices of mozzarella cheese (or use shredded, about 1 cup). Bake 12-14 minutes in 450 degree oven.
