Encouraging words from Life 96.5 friends!

Ok, I’m being a baby today, I admit it! I wanted today, January 29th to be the day I announced I lost 10 pounds, but I can’t! I’ve only lost 8 :(   But wow, thanks for all the wonderful encouragement. Here’s parts of what some of our Life 96.5 friends had to say about it!

1) Suzanne, I agree with Dave.  Eight pounds in four weeks is a start.  YOU CAN DO IT!  Secondly, if you are exercising, remember you are building muscle.  I have lost more inches than pounds and so I know I have built and retained muscle. – Camille

2) Just wanted to let you know that a two pound loss per week, which you have, is the healthiest way to lose weight AND KEEP IT OFF!!!!  Any more than that and it’s easier to put it back on so be encouraged and not discouraged!! – Erika

3) Suzanne, here is something I know from experience that works. I don’t have time right now to give you the full details, but I will give you a few. Shoot me back an email, and I will reply to it later when I have more time. Read the book Body RX by Dr. A. Scott Connelly. He is a Cardiologist/Surgeon/Trainer/Nutritionist. He started a study on metabolism at USC. Everything he says in the book is just common sense. He says quit counting pounds, and calories, and carbs. It’s about speeding up your metabolism and burning body fat. And the exercise is lifting weights, even if just light ones, instead of all cardio, which he explains also. And all the foods you can eat are not only healthy, but heart healthy. I would go into more detail, but I need to get going. Read it. It would be well worth your time. I will also give you tips on following the diet with stuff that is good to eat.  – Brian

4) Hi Suzanne,I was listening this morning when you were talking about losing weight.  I am in the same boat as you.  I have found that if you lose weight at a slower rate that you have a better chance of keeping it off.  It is a life time battle though, I know.  It is a change in lifestyle.I don’t know if you have ever heard of Walk at Home dvds. Leslie Sansone is a Christian weight lose host.  She has a special today only on QVC for 7 dvds for $40.  (qvc.com) – Dee

5)   We have a trip planned in a month and I had heard of this book called “Eat to Live” by Dr. Joel Fuhrman (I bought from Amazon for about $10, I think it’s similarly priced locally), this has a 6 week plan, followed by the “eat for life” plan following the 6 week rigorous plan.  Like what you’ve mentioned, this is certainly not a ‘diet’, but really a better way of living, the side effect is the weight loss.  With our upcoming trip, neither of us were (are) in any condition for bathing suits, we had talked about starting this for several weeks leading up to the kickoff 2.5 weeks ago.  To say the results thus far have been staggering is in understatement.  But, to say this has been difficult is also an understatement. I’m really not used to non-processed food and the vegan (I’ve cheated twice, don’t tell Dr. Fuhrman!) lifestyle, however this third week has been much simpler than the first two.Cutting to the chase, even if the food consumption in the book isn’t followed, the book is really about education. - Scott

6) The one thing I know about losing weight is that it’s hard and it never goes as fast as you want it to.   Here are a few things that really work for me.  (Although I have lost and regained and lost and regained the weight more times than I want to admit). 1 – Keep a food journal.  It really helps to know how much and what kind of food you are putting in your body all day.  Maybe one combination of food works to lose weight but another one slows down the weight loss.  For example, if I eat cashews, I am guaranteed to not lose or even gain weight that week.  So, I avoid that food.2 – Make sure you eat ENOUGH calories every day.  If you don’t eat enough, your body doesn’t work at burning off the calories because it goes into a “starvation” mode. 3 – You are making a lifestyle change – 1 to 2 lbs a week is what the “experts” say is best for you.  It’s hard to see just 1 or 2 lbs on the scale, but it really is good.4 – I absolutely love Weight Watchers.  I’m not going to the meetings right now, but I use to and I still follow the plan.  It might be something worth looking into. Most importantly is your support system.  Yes, you have all of us listeners, however, make sure you have people around you who are going to be encouraging and motivating throughout this process.  I have faith that you can do this! – Tammy

American Idol’s Audri Vargas

Sioux Falls native Audri Vargas was on the morning show today. Audri is a contestant in the televised talent contest “American Idol”. She just received a coveted ‘golden ticket’ to the next round of the competition. Hear Audri sing one of her original songs live in studio right here!

Flavor…it’s not to be feared.

Suzanne and I talked this morning about how with her new lifestyle change, her dog no longer begs for food from Suzanne’s side of the table. After watching Suzanne spend 40 minutes eating just 1/4 of a lunch she brought in, I could take it no more. Eating food doesn’t need to be a miserable experience and flavor can come from healthy sources. So, I gave Suzanne a list of some of my favorite herbs/spices that are easy to cook with. We got a lot of calls this morning inquiring about those recommendations. I’ll list here what I recommended to Suzanne and I’m including three healthy but very flavorful recipes I like to make.

Some of my favorite herbs/spices: Thyme, Rosemary, Cumin, Corriander, Red pepper flakes, Oregano. There’s so many more, but if you’re not used to cooking with a lot of herbs/spices, I’d recommend starting with these.

This first recipe is one of my favorite salads, and not only is it an unconventional salad, but it looks beautiful:

(I use chow mein noodles for this recipe and I actually omit the soy sauce. I forgot to add it the first time I made this recipe and since it tasted fine, why add the salt?)

The second recipe I think is a great unique take on tacos.

(You’ll want to note that the cilantro slaw is a separate link within this recipe and it’s what makes this recipe so good)

Finally, I don’t even like green beans, but I don’t mind them with this simple recipe:

(Corriander is another name for cilantro. You’ll want fresh cilantro for this)

If you get a chance to make any of these, I’d love to hear your feedback.

Super Cancer Fighting Foods!

A Life 96.5 friend named Kelli sent this to me about super cancer fighting foods and I wanted to share it with you!

I found this on msn.com and it’s a list of the “12 Super Foods” that are cancer resistant, heart healthy, and promote lower weight levels than those people who don’t eat these foods – have a great weekend!  Kelli

-          Nuts – especially Almonds and Pistachios

-          Whole Grains (so much better than multi grain)

-          Avocadoes (no not in guacamole!!!) and Olive Oil

-          Grass fed and range fed beef, chicken and pork

-          Berries – the best antioxidants are in these berries, and in this order:

  • Cranberries; Black Currents; Blueberries; Blackberries; Raspberries; Strawberries; and Pomegranates.

-          Instant Oats = Whole oats with low sodium

-          Veggies – Order of most beneficial:

  • Broccoli; Cauliflower; Brussels Sprouts; Kale; Cabbage; Swiss Chard; and Bok Choy.

-          Organic Fruit – especially those fruits we eat with the peeling on such as apples, peaches, and pears (no pesticides used on these)

-          Navy Beans and other Legumes

-          Dark Chocolate

-          Ice Cream – one tennis sized scoop!  (I was thinking this would be good with some berries and a little dark chocolate drizzled over it!)

Enjoy!

Suzanne changes in 2010!

Gettin’ healthy! Gettin’ healthy! I think I can do this?!? ;)

Ok, I’ve been asked about what changes exactly I’ve made this year so I thought I’d just put the list right here on our morning show blog.

1) Multi-vitamin, fishoil and probiotics for good digestion each morning.

2)Yogurt and oatmeal with flaxseed replaced my morning sausage breakfast croissant. I put mixed nuts in the oatmeal.

3)34 oz of green tea with natural sweetner stevia in place of diet Pepsi each day.

4) All natural grain bread & low fat crackers.

5) I’m now cramming in lots of veggies each day, it’s easy putting tomato, peppers, spinach leaves and mushrooms on a chicken salad sandwich.

6) Fruit is a little harder for me, but I like bananas and cantelope and grapes.

7) I’ve cut out fast food and sweets and am cooking a lot more. On the weekend I put chicken in a crockpot and eat that throughout the week. I make all different versions of it to keep things interesting.

8)  Besides the eating changes, I’ve added 20 – 30 minutes of cardio exercise daily. I find it fun and challenging to do the Wii Fit Plus. I run in place every day and add all the other fun and stretching and balancing games in too.

9) Spiritually what I’ve changed is that I am reading the bible every single day. I signed up for bible in a year so my daily “assignment” is sent to me each morning.

10) Oh yea, my 10th thing is that I’ve cut my frappuccino in take in half. It’s a treat for me, but now I just limit the fun, and I don’t feel denied. Know what I mean?

11) And finally, I switched from regular deodorant spray and went to an all natural roll on that doesn’t have aluminum. Some research suggests aluminum can cause cancer, especially since deodorant is applied often to broken skin after shaving. Maybe nothing to it, just another “on the safe side” change I’ve made.

The changes were prompted by my sister’s breast cancer diagnosis last year. I have cancer on both sides of my family so I can’t take my health for granted, plus I’d LOVE to lose some weight!

Help! It’s chicken nugget Tuesday!!!

Here it is 10:30 Tuesday morning. I’m off the air and doing more desk type work. Well, I’m supposed to be anyway but my mind is elsewhere. Honestly, it’s on my lunch box! I keep looking in it even though I’m the one who packed it, so I know what’s in there!

I refuse to use the word “diet”.  I’m not on … one of those. I”m just eating healthy. Lots of fruits and vegetables and grains and other stuff that’s really good for you. I’ve been doing so well, no real cravings till this morning. Ugh, I hate this. I want McDonalds right now so bad! Maybe because it’s Tuesday and this is the day chicken nuggets are only .99. It’s a habit, I admit it.

So I guess like every other bad habit, we confront it and pray through it. I could use a prayer warrior partner right about now!

God, please give me strength today. You know it’s chicken nugget Tuesday!

New Year, New You!

Ok, it’s 2010 and I vow that this is the year I WILL get healthy. Do I want to lose weight? Of course, but my sister being diagnosed with breast cancer last year was a wake up call for me. So, here we go, it’s January 6th and so far so good. I’ve changed my eating habits pretty drastically.

I’ve replaced my morning breakfast sausage and egg croissant with oatmeal, yogurt and fruit and my big roastbeef and mayo sandwich on a roll for lunch is now chicken salad on grain bread with tomato and spinach leaves.

I can do this and you can too. Whatever changes you’ve made, speak words of truth about your change. Pray for people around you who are making changes. And remember, don’t “ride” people if they make a mistake along the way.

PS – I’ve lost 5 pounds so far ;)
