February is American Heart Month, drawing attention to cardiovascular disease, America’s No. 1 killer, and the strides being taken through research and education to raise awareness and decrease death rates.
Since 1963, February has been celebrated as American Heart Month to urge Americans to join the battle against heart disease. Consider these statistics:
- Cardiovascular disease kills more than 450,000 women each year, which is about one every minute.
- Sixty-four percent of women who die suddenly of coronary heart disease have no previous symptoms.
- More women die of cardiovascular diseases than the next five causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer.
- 80 percent of cardiac events in women could be prevented if women make the right choices for their hearts, such as getting regular exercise, eating healthier, choosing not to smoke and managing their cholesterol and blood pressure.
In February 2004, American Heart Association launched its Go Red For Women movement that has since grown into a vibrant national movement as more women, men, celebrities, healthcare providers and politicians embrace and elevate the cause of women and heart disease.
Various supporters of the American Heart Association and Go Red For Women are marking February with special activities. Here’s a look at what is happening in our area:
Wear Red Day: Companies and individuals across the country, and right here in South Dakota are participating in National Wear Red Day on Friday, Feb. 3rd. Be a part of this special day by wearing red and helping to spread awareness to your friends, families and loved ones. Learn more at www.GoRedForWomen.org
Red in the City: Organizations and landmarks will be going red to show their support of fighting heart disease in women. To get involved, visit http://www.goredforwomen.org/WearRedDay/whosgoingred/
Go Red Connect: Survivors and individuals who have a story about how heart disease has affected their lives are invited to share their story and connect with others at our Go Red Connect Casting Call event on Saturday, February 4 at 10:00 a.m. in the Macy’s Court at The Empire Mall. Share your story for the chance to become a Go Red For Women spokesperson. For additional details, visit www.heart.org/SouthDakota.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls has a mission to improve Sioux Falls, one home at a time. And Habitat has a special way for Life 96.5 listeners and others in our community to partner with them and make a difference this month.
Sioux Falls has been selected as the site of the 2011 “Blitz Home Builders” build location. This national volunteer group selects just one city annually! They will be building 3 homes over a 9 day period, July 21-29. Locations and recipient/partner families have been selected.
Many companies and organizations have already signed on to help with materials, finances, labor, meals, and other volunteer commitments. And when the work begins on July 21, you can be the hands and feet of Jesus by serving together with us as we “Bless the Blitz”!
225 people have already volunteered to help the 100 builders that will be coming to Sioux Falls. We would like to help feed, support, encourage, and otherwise bless those volunteers with your help!
The Life 96.5 staff will be cooking and serving a meal for the builders and volunteers on Tuesday July 26th. While the food will be purchased by Habitat for this meal, your help in offsetting the cost with a monetary donation would be welcome. Please contact luanne@knwc.org to help with meal costs.
Here are some of the ways you can help “Bless the Blitz”:
- Volunteer your time at the site during the “Blitz Build” by helping register volunteers and directing them to their work place, or by providing minor first aid and taking bottled water to workers. The home sites are just steps away from the volunteer tent. A mom and her kids or a retired person would be perfect for this. Call Troy at (605)339-6406 or (605)370-3033 or email him at troy.gordon@siouxfallshabitat.org for more information.
- Your group can provide and serve a meal (for 100). Seven of the 9 meals have been spoken for, but dates remain: Saturday, July 23rd. This is a great service opportunity for a youth or church group, or even a generous family. Call Troy Gordon with questions or to volunteer in this way at (605)339-6406 or (605)370-3033.
- Provide snacks. Each day snacks are provided at 8:30am and 1:30pm for the 100 volunteer workers on site. You can donate healthy snacks like fruit, homemade trail mix, home baked breads, cookies, or bars, granola bars, energy bars, crackers, or anything else that is easy to serve and eat. This is a huge need and a wonderful way to help if you cannot volunteer your time. Contact Troy at (605)339-6406 or (605)370-3033 or email him at troy.gordon@siouxfallshabitat.org for more information.
- Your construction skills can go to work if you wish to volunteer as an “on call builder”. Sometimes groups that travel to Sioux Falls from other communities get held up or cannot make it and fill-ins are needed on short notice. Contact Troy at (605)339-6406 or (605)370-3033 or email him at troy.gordon@siouxfallshabitat.org for more information.
The “Blitz Build” will take place at Hayward Meadows on Amber Street in northwest Sioux Falls, From Marion Road going north, go west (left) to Cockatiel, go west (left) to Amber and then go right on Amber Street to the site. See and download a map here>>
Why Hands & Feet?
At Life 96.5, we believe each follower of Christ is called to be His hands and feet in our homes, communities, and the world. Serving in Jesus name is the concept behind Life 96.5 Hands and Feet. Each month we introduce you to a new project or organization in our area that we’d like you to know more about. Hands and Feet gives you an opportunity to serve our community by getting involved in what these groups are doing by serving as the hands and feet of Jesus.
Hands & Feet Ideas
If you know of an event or organization that would be helped by our promotional resources, please contact luanne@knwc.org.
Your Android or iPhone can be a great tool for helping strengthen your marriage! The Date Your Spouse App can help with Date Night Planning (includes over 70 date ideas), Date Night Scheduling (allowing the user to schedule repeat date night reminders), and can even help bring couples closer together with tools like conversation starters, questions to help you get to know your spouse better, and space to record your spouse’s favorites and gift ideas.
A little extra help in a fun application to improve your marriage–priceless! (Actually, it’s only 99cents)
It’s a little disappointing in Sioux Falls to see muddy paths where the paved bike trail used to wind around town. The construction and repairs will continue this Spring and Summer, but ultimately will result in a better trail. You can link up to the City’s website for a map showing sections which are open or closed.
